GET ECLIPSED! Are you ready for the Solar Eclipse this August?
It's time to start planning your summer. If you've not, here's a great idea! Why not host a special meet up for the Great American Solar Eclipse coming August 21, 2017! It's on a Monday so you might have to do a little planning to have it work with your troop since most kids will be in school by then.
Depending on where you are, you also might need to adjust the times that you meet up or meet up earlier so your girls can watch the end of it together. Here in Texas, it's right smack in the middle of the school day so we will be covering it at our meeting a couple days before.
This event is a REALLY big deal. There are websites, special campouts planned and more! If you need a few resources you can always check out NASA for the details as well as websites like this featuring specifics to each area of the country.
I love that NASA has activities to print/use. Although I think that Girl Scouts should not be like school and should be more "fun learning" remember that this is an opprotunity to not only bring some of the STEM program into a meeting but also to allow the girls to learn more than what they may learn in school about the topic.
On the NASA site they have some great lessons that you might want to check out when you are planning your meeting. I personally like the solar cookie activity that they have and of course how can a little moon hide a big sun activity.
We are based in Texas so it's not going to be as great of a view for us. We will not be able to see a total eclipse of the Sun. I love though that this website gives you an idea of when you'll be able to see it. (note the bottom of the picture for the specifics)
The Girl Scout Website has fun patches and glasses so your girls can view the eclipse safely. There are also a couple of books and maps that you can grab too so that you can better teach the girls about the eclipse. If you wanted to have a meeting around just this you could and allow the girls to earn the fun patch then.

Where can I see the eclipse from?
