Do Daisies Need the Girl Scout Journey Books?

This is such a great question. The answer however is "Yes and No". If you are a leader, you should have a copy of each one. However, when it comes to the girls having one, that depends on what you want to do with them as a troop.

Here are just a few answers to the question "Do Daisies Need the Girl Scout Journey Books?"

Daisies are Just Getting Started

If you have a Daisy troop, it's up to you and your parents if each girl needs the Journey Books. As for the Daisy Notebook, that too might not be needed. It all depends on how you run your program.

Personally, I have a set of Journey books and the Daisy Guide but I don't require them of the girls. The reason being, the girls are young and can't use them without the help of a parent. We read the stories as a group at meetings and then I pull key things out of the journeys to share with them. If parents want to purchase them that is up to them.

I have talked with a few troop leaders that said their girls just did not relate to the "flowers" in the journey Daisy Guide. I can totally relate. Some of the girls just did not connect with some of the flower stories so I really pick and choose.

Cost

Many parents are concerned with costs at this age and I understand that. Their daughter is young and they might not connect with the program and that's okay. With an investment of about $45 for just the vest/tunic and all the patches, this can be a lot.

Do Leaders Need the Books?

The answer is Yes. All leaders should read both the adult guide and then the girls guide for each activity. Honestly, it's the only way to fully understand the goals and expectations of the program. If you are trying to save money, you could put one leader in charge of the petals and one in charge of each of the Journeys. This way costs happen gradually and if your troop can't afford to buy the books for the leaders, no one leader is saddled with having to buy $50+ in leadership books.

Does your troop use the books or utilize them in another way? We would love to hear what you do!
