Daisy Scouts: Earning our Honest and Fair Petal
Daisies are the youngest members of the Girl Scouts. The girls are in grades Kindergarten and First Grade and this year, my daughter and I have our own troop. After a year of Girl Scouts with an amazing troop we were ready to venture out on our own and "be a friend to every Girl Scout".
Daisy petals help the girls learn the parts of the girl scout law. They are broken down like this so that the girls have a chance to focus on each topic an explore it to whatever extent the leader wants. Each petal can involve the girls in stories, activities, songs, crafts, service projects and anything else the troop leader sees they are interested in. The goal is that it will both engage them and help them understand each part of the law. The girls wear the petals on their vest or tunic and they symbolize their journey as a Girl Scout. Once they have earned all the petals, they will have the full Daisy on their uniform and it's so cute!
Every level of Girl Scouts the girls will have opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of the law. The law in a nutshell is a basis for how we should all be living.
Here's how we earned our light blue petal:
We have been working on our first petal in our troop. It's the light blue "honest and fair" petal. Although it is related to the story of Lupe the Lupine in the program, we did not use the stories provided (more on that later).
To earn our petal we:
- Talked about honesty and what it means to be "fair"
- We made friendship necklaces and the girls had to be fair, share the beads and help each other.
- We made friendship cookies and everyone helped
This is one of the petals that is easy to start with right away. All girls at this age have the basic concepts of this topic. One of the big things in Girl Scouts is that all the girls learn to support, cheer on and be a friend to every girl. That's why you can easily kick this off at the first meeting.
I mentioned at the first meeting that being "honest and fair" and "friendly and helpful" also reminded me of Applejack from My Little Pony. She's always ready to lend a helping hand to her pony friends and she also has to be very fair making sure all the ponies share her delicious apples. This started a great conversation among the girls.
Since the stories in the Girl Scout books did not hold my daughters attention I honestly id not try them with the troop. I did find some other books that could be used if your Daisies don't connect with the flower theme either:
My Little Pony: Applejack and the Honest-to-Goodness Switcheroo
Ruthie and the (Not So) Teeny Tiny Lie
Little Croc's Purse
What did your Daisies do to earn their honest and fair petal?
