Daisy Journey: 3 Cheers for Animals!

We've been working on our Three Cheers for Animals Journey with the troop and things have been going really well! I am one of those people that doesn't always go by the book and this was no exception.

Although this is not our council, I found a lot a lot of inspiration from this "plan your Daisy year" link. Check it out. They have so interesting ideas for combining petal work and Journey work which is awesome!

Requirement One- Bird Bath, Daisies Learn to Care for Animals and Themselves

"Learn to care for animals and for yourself and see just how good that makes you feel. Gain courage and confidence in teaching others how to care, too!"

For us, the bird's nest was a must. However there are so many ways do this that it was easy to pick one that worked for us! We chose to make the nests out of brown paper lunch bags. The cost was super low (I got 100 bags for .99 cents).

For us we made the nests by looking at the Journey book and talking about different kinds of birds nests!  The girls loved hearing that some birds make their nests with soft things as well as items like nails and sticks. We discussed also how they build their own nests ever night when they go to bed as well as how their home is like a nest. It was a great talk! This also led to a conversation about how we take care of ourselves.

Later we also compared how to care for dogs and how that is just like caring for ourselves. I brought out my little 3 lbs. pup and the girls loved it. We talked about bathing, brushing our teeth, brushing our hair, wearing warm clothes and of course eating healthy foods. This was a great activity for showing that caring for animals is a lot like caring for ourselves.

Requirement Two- Red Robin, Daisies Use Their Knowledge and Creativity to Teach Others How to Care for Animals

For the second task, we did not build a bird bath because honestly, I did not know what to do with it once it was done and we have a large group of girls. We would have had to make about 4 of them to allow everyone to participate and that just would not work.

So thinking about of the box, we decided that we would learn how to make our own natural, eco friendly bird feeders. We talked about how you can make all sorts of homemade treats for pets and animals that live in our own backyard. The girls had the recipes and we were able to take those recipe cards and create a mini booklet for them to take with them or share with a friend. You can find a ton of recipes for dog biscuits, bird feeders, cat treats and more.

Just head to Pinterest and search "Pet Treats" you'll get way more recipes and ideas that you'll ever need.

Take Action Project-Tula Award, Daisies Gain Courage and Confidence to Teach Others About Animal Care

Seeing that it was almost winter time, we utilized a free family event at the local botanic gardens to put our bird feeders into action. The bird feeders were eco-friendly and we used this recipe to create them. Then in December, we will go as a troop to the event and hang them all over the gardens to help feed the birds and other animals all winter long. Each girl made at least two bird feeders. The girls loved this activity!

We also made sure to share our ideas with other girls in our Service Unit so they could also learn about one way we care for birds in our community.

In addition you could use these to meet other requirements for Both Daisies and if you have a muli-level troop many other levels of Girl Scouts:
